On Friday 16th June 2017, 150 coaches, athletes and other sporting volunteers attended the Somerset Activity and Sports Partnership (SASP) Awards at Taunton Rugby Club.
The yearly awards are organised by SASP to celebrate and recognise the county’s volunteers, great coaches, outstanding athletes and quality sports clubs achievements and successes.
It was a strong year with over 100 entries for awards across 14 categories. The evening saw our very own coach ‘Big Love‘ (Rod) awarded Children’s Coach of the Year for all his efforts with the youth team he coaches at Wells RFC. As a result the team has grown in numbers year on year and is an encouraging environment where the team have fun whilst learning about the sport they love.
As a committed and well respected coach Rod has enabled my son to continue to progress his skill and enjoy his rugby. By fostering a great team spirit and nurturing the skills of the whole U13 team in equal measure, great match results are consistently achieved. A fair minded coach who continues to encourage all the boys to reach their full potential!

The fun and friendship doesn’t stop on the pitch, the team regularly bond on outings organised by Rod, Estelle (his lovely wife) and parents of the players.
“SASP feel it’s important to recognise the tireless efforts of our fantastic workforce. Volunteers are the backbone of community sport. Great coaches not only support athletes to realise their potential but help to create an important lifelong love of sport and physical activity”.
